The Grail The Grail - Who we are
Who we are

About the Grail Society

Grail people come from many backgrounds, traditions and cultures, married and single. You will find them all over the UK, working in different trades and professions.

There are many ways of being part of the Grail, all with varying degrees of commitment.

Fellowship, support and challenge bond Grail people who find their faith strengthened and nourished through belonging. The Grail is on a quest for the treasure of great price promised by Jesus Christ to those who try to live as he did. We are people dedicated to God and centred on Christ
About the different parts of the Grail Society

The Grail Community together with Grail Companions form a Secular Institute, the official title of which is: The Women of Nazareth, known as The Grail (Charity No: 221076).

The Grail Community, Grail Companions, Grail Partners, Grail Associates and Grail Young Adults form The Grail Society. As a Charity (No: 1104750) it is known as Grail Society UK.

We try to respond to needs as they arise. An example of this is the work a small group have done in response to The Stephen Lawrence Enquiry, to see how we might more readily be part of a multi-ethnic society. Download report - Serving a Multi Ethnic Society (.pdf)

  • Grail Community members
The Grail community members are a full-time lay community who live together at The Hermitage, Winchester. They are a small group of single women and Roman Catholic. They live a simple uncluttered life-style, and a celibate way of life. Known as Community Members they make a long-term commitment. For more see Grail Community.

  • Grail Companions
These are also single women and Roman Catholic. They live in their own homes and continue in their chosen career and profession. They make an annual commitment to the Grail. For more see Grail Companions.

  • Grail Partners
Whilst acknowledging that their first priority is to their family, Grail Partners wish to be formally associated with the Grail. They make an annual commitment to work for and with the Grail. They meet regularly together.
(For more , read the reflections of Margaret Smith about her many years as a Grail Partner.)

  • Grail Associates
There is a much wider group of men and women who are Associates, receiving the magazine and finding in the Grail a spiritual dimension to life. Grail Associates are women and men with different religious convictions. For more see Grail Associates.
